- Public Materials and Displays
The Library maintains bulletin boards, brochure racks, and limited display space for the purpose of disseminating library, community, or public service information and materials of educational or cultural interest. The Library Board subscribes to the tenets of the Library Bill of Rights, which states in part “Libraries which make exhibit spaces and meeting rooms available to the public they serve should make facilities available on an equitable basis, regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting their use… Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.” The uses made of display and exhibit space shall conform to the Library Bill of Rights, which is incorporated in the Library’s materials selection policy. Approval of a display or distribution of handout materials does not indicate endorsement of any cause or activity.
In addition to distributing brochures produced or intentionally secured by the Library, the Library provides space, subject to availability, for distribution of brochures and similar materials that are donated to the Library but not added to the collection. Subject availability, space is also provided in the Library for posters advertising events sponsored by non-profit organizations.
Space for these items is provided on an equitable basis, regardless of the beliefs or affiliations of individuals or groups requesting their use. Materials shall not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of these contributing to their creation; nor shall they be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval. Although, space is provided, no endorsement of the viewpoints expressed in these or other materials found in the Library is implied.
All materials for posting must be submitted for approval by designated Library Director. Items left for approval will be kept by the Library for five days if not approved, during which time they may be picked up. Approved items will be posted. Approved materials shall be marked with the date of posting and staff initials and will be posted as space permits. Library staff may remove materials posted more than 30 days. Any materials posted without approval will be removed and discarded.
Materials which will not be approved for posting include personal requests, commercial advertisements of products or services, petitions, campaign literature, and any materials deemed discriminatory. Brochures and other printed materials produced strictly for the purpose of selling merchandise, or for merchandising for profit services, shall not be accepted. Posting related to lifeforms at risk (i.e. lost pet) will be allowed Decisions may be appealed to the Library Board.
